WORK EXPERIENCE

St. John Fisher College, September 2002 to May 2021

  • Professor of Media and Communication. Responsible primarily for courses in multimedia content, introductory and advanced journalism, media law/ethics, and data analytics. (Also held an adjunct position at St. John Fisher from September 1998 to May 2000.)

State University College at Brockport, January 2001 to May 2002.

  • Visiting Assistant Professor of Communication. Full-time position teaching courses in news writing, feature writing, editorial methods, newspaper design, media law/ethics and special-topic seminar on media, business and society. Advised student newspaper the Stylus.

Democrat and Chronicle, Rochester NY, November 1986-September 2002.

  • Copy Editor/Section Editor. Regular duties included content editing, copy editing, headline writing and design/pagination of newspaper pages. Held position with similar responsibilities at Pocono Record newspaper, Stroudsburg, Pa., July 1985 – November 1986.

  • Undergraduate: Dual-major bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science, May 1980. Wrote senior honors thesis on government and media during the Nixon administration.

Accepted for competitive, partially funded two-week research fellowship scheduled to take place during June 2020 but canceled due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.
  • Solutions Journalism Educators Academy, July 2018. Participated in three-day workshop organized and presented by faculty of the University of Oregon on the techniques and pedagogy of helping students learn solutions journalism. Participation was subject to competitive selection; was one of just 10 educators who earned fellowships to attend.
  • Guest Editor, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Spring 2017. Guest edited special section on a collaborative project between AEJMC and the Kettering Foundation on Revitalizing the Bonds of Journalism, Citizenship and Democracy.
